Philippa Marrack

Philippa Marrack along with John Kappler discovered the basic rules by which T cells recognize and respond to antigens through the T cell receptor-MHC interaction. Their discovery of the structural basis for MHC restriction and self-tolerance through negative thymic selection has been foundational for all of T cell immunology, including cancer immunology. Their discovery of superantigens also contributed to understanding T cell activation mechanisms.
