Dr. Peyton Rous received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1966, over 50 years after his discovery of the Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) in 1911 — the first cancer-causing virus identified. His discovery that a filterable agent could transmit cancer opened the field of tumor virology and ultimately led to the identification of the src oncogene, proto-oncogenes, and the entire modern understanding of oncogene-driven cancer. His legacy underpins all of modern cancer molecular biology.
