Peter Valent has been a pioneer in defining the diagnostic criteria and biology of mast cell neoplasms, establishing CD2 and CD25 as aberrant mast cell markers and contributing to the WHO classification of systemic mastocytosis that guides clinical management. His research has characterized mast cell progenitors and their malignant counterparts in systemic mastocytosis and mast cell leukemia. He has identified prognostic markers and novel therapeutic targets for aggressive mast cell neoplasms. His work has been foundational for the modern understanding and treatment of mast cell diseases.
