Peter Smibert co-invented CITE-seq (Cellular Indexing of Transcriptomes and Epitopes by Sequencing), a transformative technology that enables simultaneous measurement of transcriptome and cell surface protein expression in single cells using oligonucleotide-conjugated antibodies. CITE-seq has become the standard method for multimodal immune profiling of tumor microenvironments, combining the scalability of scRNA-seq with the protein-level resolution of flow cytometry. He has extended this to ECCITE-seq incorporating CRISPR guide RNA detection for perturbation screens. His technological innovations have been adopted across the cancer immunology field for characterizing immune cell phenotypes in clinical trial samples.
