Peter Jones is a pioneer of DNA methylation cancer epigenetics who discovered that 5-azacytidine (azacitidine) can demethylate cancer cell DNA and reactivate silenced tumor suppressor genes. His foundational laboratory research on DNMT inhibitor mechanisms directly contributed to the clinical development of azacitidine and decitabine for MDS and AML — representing one of the first validated epigenetic cancer therapies.
