Peter Dirks identified cancer stem cells in brain tumors, demonstrating that CD133-positive cells from glioblastoma can initiate tumor growth upon transplantation. His laboratory has extensively characterized the glioblastoma stem cell population, showing its role in treatment resistance, tumor recurrence, and cellular heterogeneity. He integrates single-cell genomics and lineage tracing to understand brain cancer stem cell dynamics in patients. His work has opened new therapeutic avenues targeting the cells responsible for inevitable glioblastoma recurrence.
