Peter Carmeliet is a world leader in angiogenesis and vascular biology who has made foundational contributions to understanding VEGF signaling, vessel formation, and the tumor vasculature. His laboratory discovered the role of endothelial cell metabolism in vessel formation and characterized how tip and stalk cell dynamics govern angiogenesis. He has investigated vessel normalization strategies that improve tumor oxygenation and drug delivery. His comprehensive basic science characterization of VEGF pathway signaling has informed anti-angiogenic drug development and continues to reveal new therapeutic opportunities in cancer.
