Peng Bhatt investigates the gut-liver axis and how portal microbiome dysbiosis contributes to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma development. His research demonstrated that altered gut microbiota composition promotes liver cancer through LPS translocation, bile acid dysmetabolism, and microbial metabolite signaling in the liver. He characterized specific gut microbial signatures associated with HCC risk and NASH progression. His translational work explores microbiome-targeted interventions including probiotics, prebiotics, and fecal transplantation to reduce liver cancer risk.
