Paul Sugarbaker developed cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal surface malignancies — establishing that selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis from appendiceal, colorectal, ovarian, and other cancers can achieve long-term survival with aggressive multimodality treatment. His surgical techniques and patient selection criteria for HIPEC have been widely adopted internationally.
