Paul Sugarbaker

Paul Sugarbaker is the founding pioneer of cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for peritoneal surface malignancies. He developed the surgical techniques and chemotherapy protocols that established peritoneal metastases as a potentially curable condition rather than an end-stage disease. Over four decades he performed over 2,500 HIPEC procedures and trained the majority of peritoneal surface oncology surgeons worldwide. His work transformed the treatment paradigm for pseudomyxoma peritonei, colorectal peritoneal metastases, and mesothelioma.
