Patrick Walsh revolutionized the surgical treatment of prostate cancer by developing the nerve-sparing radical retropubic prostatectomy, which preserves sexual function and continence while achieving cancer cure. His detailed anatomical studies of the prostate, surrounding fascia, and neurovascular bundles enabled a surgical technique that dramatically reduced the morbidity of prostate cancer surgery.
