Dr. Padmanee Sharma at MD Anderson has made landmark translational contributions to understanding how ipilimumab and other checkpoint inhibitors work in patients. She discovered that anti-CTLA-4 ipilimumab increases inducible T cell co-stimulator (ICOS)-positive T cells and induces ICOS expression as a pharmacodynamic response biomarker. Her work on Treg depletion in tumors by CTLA-4 antibodies has shaped mechanistic understanding of how checkpoint therapy reverses immune suppression in vivo.
