Funmi Olopade has pioneered the study of breast cancer genetics in African and African-descent populations, revealing that the high prevalence of triple-negative breast cancer and unique BRCA mutation spectra in African women reflects distinct evolutionary genetic backgrounds that are not captured by genomic studies conducted primarily in European populations. Her research at the University of Chicago has built pan-African cancer genomics infrastructure and has demonstrated that precision oncology approaches must incorporate African genetic diversity to achieve equity.
