Nuria Lopez-Bigas has developed widely used computational methods for distinguishing driver from passenger mutations in cancer genomes. Her dN/dS-based approaches (OncodriveFML, IntOGen) have identified cancer driver genes across tumor types with unprecedented precision. She has established that the ratio of non-synonymous to synonymous mutations provides the most robust statistical framework for identifying genes under positive selection in cancer.
