Nubia Munoz is a pioneering cancer epidemiologist who provided foundational evidence establishing HPV as the necessary cause of cervical cancer. Through large-scale international studies, she characterized the carcinogenic risk of specific HPV genotypes, forming the evidentiary basis for classifying HPV types 16 and 18 as Group 1 human carcinogens. Her work with IARC shaped global cancer prevention policy and directly enabled the development of HPV vaccines. She is widely regarded as one of the most consequential figures in cancer prevention.
