Peter Nowell
MD
Professor Emeritus of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
👥Biography 个人简介
Peter Nowell co-discovered the Philadelphia chromosome as the first consistent chromosomal abnormality in human cancer and authored the landmark 1976 paper proposing that cancer develops through clonal evolution driven by acquired genetic instability and Darwinian selection, establishing the theoretical foundation for all subsequent cancer evolution research. His clonal evolution model predicted that tumors would become progressively more heterogeneous and drug-resistant through evolutionary dynamics, predictions that have been validated by modern genomic studies decades later. His intellectual framework remains the cornerstone of cancer evolution biology and evolutionary oncology.
