Nicola Valeri has been at the forefront of translating patient-derived organoid drug screening into clinical practice for gastrointestinal cancers, conducting prospective clinical studies demonstrating that organoid drug sensitivity testing can identify effective therapeutic regimens for individual patients. His laboratory has established high-throughput organoid screening platforms that test panels of standard-of-care and experimental agents within timeframes compatible with clinical decision-making. He has identified organoid-derived pharmacogenomic biomarkers that predict response to targeted therapies including EGFR inhibitors and FGFR inhibitors. His clinical trials evaluating organoid-guided therapy selection are establishing the evidence base for functional precision oncology.
