👥Biography 个人简介

Naomi Halas is a University Professor and the Stanley C. Moore Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University, where she founded the Laboratory for Nanophotonics. She is the inventor of gold nanoshells — hollow gold nanoparticles that absorb near-infrared light and convert it to heat — and a pioneering figure in plasmonics. Her gold nanoshell technology led to AuroShell (now commercialized by Nanospectra Biosciences), which has been used in clinical trials for photothermal ablation of head and neck cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer. Near-infrared laser activation of tumor-accumulated nanoshells can ablate tumors with minimal systemic side effects. She has published over 350 papers with over 60,000 citations and has received every major award in nanoscience and chemistry. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and National Academy of Inventors.

她的金纳米壳技术催生了AuroShell(现由Nanospectra Biosciences商业化),该技术已在头颈癌、前列腺癌和乳腺癌的光热消融临床试验中使用。肿瘤积聚纳米壳的近红外激光激活可以以最小的系统性副作用消融肿瘤。

🎓Key Contributions 主要贡献

Gold Nanoshell Invention

Invented gold nanoshells — core-shell nanoparticles with tunable optical properties across near-infrared spectrum. First demonstration of engineered plasmonic resonance in nanoparticles with medical applications.

Photothermal Cancer Therapy (AuroShell)

Translated gold nanoshell technology to AuroShell, used in human clinical trials for minimally invasive laser ablation of solid tumors. Near-IR lasers activate tumor-accumulated nanoshells, creating localized heat to destroy cancer cells.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) Diagnostics

Developed SERS-active nanoparticles for ultrasensitive detection of biomarkers in blood, enabling early cancer detection from minimal tissue samples.

Nanophotonic Solar Energy Harvesting

Applied plasmonic nanomaterials to solar-driven steam generation and catalysis, with implications for water purification and photocatalytic cancer treatment.
