Balfour Mount coined the term 'palliative care' and established the first hospital-based palliative care service in a teaching hospital at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal in 1975, creating the model for integrating palliative care into acute care settings. His vision of whole-person care throughout the illness trajectory, not just at end of life, anticipated the modern early palliative care integration approach. He is recognized as the father of palliative care in North America and his contributions have influenced palliative care development globally.
