Moritz Gerstung led the timing analysis in the Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) project, establishing molecular clocks for reconstructing the evolutionary history of cancer genomes. His work revealed that many driver mutations and chromosomal gains occur years to decades before cancer diagnosis, redefining the timeline of cancer evolution. He has developed Bayesian methods for ordering mutational events and estimating their timing relative to cancer diagnosis.
