Patrick Moore co-discovered Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) in 1994 and Merkel cell polyomavirus in 2008 with Yuan Chang, making them one of the most productive tumor virus discovery teams in history. He developed digital transcriptome subtraction to identify novel human tumor viruses. His work has directly identified two of the seven known human cancer viruses.
