Michael Fiore at Wisconsin directed development of the US Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guidelines for Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence — the most impactful document in evidence-based smoking cessation. Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of cancer, responsible for approximately 30% of all cancer deaths including most lung cancers. His work translating evidence on pharmacotherapy (nicotine replacement, bupropion, varenicline) and behavioral interventions into clinical guidelines has prevented millions of cancer cases.
