Michael Clarke at Stanford demonstrated the existence of breast cancer stem cells — showing that CD44+CD24- cells within human breast cancer have dramatically enhanced tumor-forming capacity and can regenerate the full heterogeneity of the primary tumor. This discovery confirmed that the cancer stem cell concept extends beyond hematological malignancies to solid tumors and has driven extensive research on targeting cancer stem cell self-renewal pathways in solid cancers.
