Michael Birrer is a leading gynecologic oncology researcher who has contributed seminal molecular biology discoveries and clinical trial leadership in ovarian cancer. As a long-standing GOG investigator, he led or co-led multiple transformative trials including GOG 252 (carboplatin/paclitaxel dosing) and has contributed to molecular characterization of HRD subsets benefiting from platinum. Birrer directed the MGH ovarian cancer program for many years before leading UAB Cancer Center. His laboratory work on the molecular heterogeneity of ovarian cancer histotypes has informed subtype-specific treatment development and biomarker identification.
