Michael Bhatt uses single-cell genomics to dissect tumor heterogeneity and clonal evolution at unprecedented resolution. His research has developed methods for tracking copy number evolution and clonal dynamics within tumors using single-cell DNA sequencing. He has characterized cell-state plasticity in cancer as a mechanism of adaptive resistance distinct from genetic heterogeneity. His work using lineage tracing approaches has revealed developmental hierarchies within tumors and the origins of cancer cell diversity.
