Max Wicha at Michigan is a pioneer of breast cancer stem cell biology. His work identified IL-6 and STAT3 as key signaling molecules maintaining breast cancer stem cell self-renewal and demonstrated that paracrine feedback loops between cancer stem cells and their niche maintain the CSC state. His translational research on targeting CSC pathways with IL-6 pathway inhibitors, combined with conventional therapy, has generated clinical trial hypotheses now being tested.
