Matthias Mann at the Max Planck Institute is the world's leading mass spectrometry-based proteomics researcher. His development of SILAC (stable isotope labeling by amino acids in cell culture), MaxQuant software, and deep proteome analysis approaches have enabled comprehensive proteome characterization of cancer cells, biofluids, and tissues. His contributions to clinical cancer proteomics, characterizing the proteomes of hundreds of cancer samples, have revealed protein-level cancer biology not visible at the genomic level.
