Massimo Colombo

Massimo Colombo has made major contributions to establishing HCC surveillance protocols for patients with chronic viral hepatitis and cirrhosis. His epidemiological studies in Italian HCV and HBV cohorts characterized HCC incidence rates that informed the evidence base for semiannual ultrasound surveillance recommendations. He has evaluated the performance of ultrasound plus alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) surveillance in detecting early-stage HCC amenable to curative treatment. His clinical research has advanced understanding of HCC risk factors beyond viral status including metabolic dysfunction and has influenced European hepatology society HCC surveillance guidelines.
