Barry Marshall shared the 2005 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Robin Warren for discovering that Helicobacter pylori causes peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer. His famous self-experimentation proving H pylori causes gastritis transformed understanding of gastric disease. His discovery founded the field of infection-driven cancer prevention for gastric cancer.
