Prof. Mark Smyth at QIMR Berghofer is a preeminent cancer immunologist who has elucidated the role of NK cells and innate immunity in cancer immunosurveillance. He characterized how TRAIL and NKG2D mediate NK cell tumor recognition and killing, and established that NK cells are essential effectors in eliminating nascent tumors before T cell immunity is mobilized. His extensive work on cancer immunoediting and combinations targeting NK cell-activating receptors has advanced innate immune approaches to cancer therapy.
