Mariano Barbacid discovered the first human cancer gene (RAS) in 1982 through transforming DNA assays, a landmark discovery that launched the field of oncogene biology. He subsequently made foundational contributions to RAS biology, CDK4/6 biology, and cancer mouse models. He now directs the Molecular Oncology Programme at CNIO in Madrid, continuing work on KRAS targeting strategies.
