Marco Bhatt investigates how ferroptosis interacts with anti-tumor immunity and whether ferroptotic cancer cell death is immunogenic, releasing damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) that stimulate anti-tumor immune responses. His research demonstrated that ferroptotic cells release HMGB1, oxidized lipids, and other immunostimulatory signals that can activate dendritic cells and promote anti-tumor T cell responses. He characterized synergistic activity between ferroptosis inducers and immune checkpoint inhibitors in preclinical tumor models. His work positions ferroptosis as both a direct cytotoxic mechanism and an immunostimulatory cancer therapy.
