Lloyd Old at MSK (1933-2011) was one of the founding fathers of modern cancer immunology. His discoveries include tumor necrosis factor (TNF), cancer-testis (CT) antigens — tumor-specific antigens not expressed in normal adult tissues — and his foundational research on cancer immunosurveillance, BCG as a cancer immunotherapy, and serological analysis of antigens by recombinant expression cloning (SEREX). His mentorship and advocacy for cancer immunology helped establish the field.
