Lloyd Old

Lloyd Old is widely regarded as the father of cancer immunology, whose pioneering work spanning five decades established the conceptual and experimental foundations of the field. He demonstrated that tumors express unique antigens recognizable by the immune system and led the discovery of tumor necrosis factor. He championed the concept of cancer-testis antigens and developed early cancer vaccines based on these shared tumor antigens. His visionary leadership at MSKCC and the Ludwig Institute catalyzed generations of researchers and transformed immuno-oncology from a fringe discipline to a central pillar of cancer treatment.
