Marston Linehan discovered the VHL gene and elucidated the VHL-HIF pathway that became the therapeutic target for belzutifan. His work on hereditary kidney cancer syndromes has identified multiple genes and pathways driving renal cell carcinoma. He is considered the father of kidney cancer genetics and his discoveries have directly enabled the development of HIF-2alpha inhibitors.
