Liang Li developed chemical isotope labeling strategies that dramatically improve the coverage and sensitivity of metabolomics analysis, enabling detection of cancer metabolites at concentrations too low for conventional approaches. His high-coverage metabolome profiling of pancreatic cancer has identified early detection biomarkers for this lethal malignancy. His innovations in metabolomics sample preparation and analysis have expanded the detectable cancer metabolome by an order of magnitude.
