Lea Harrington has made significant contributions to understanding the biochemistry of telomerase and its role in cancer. She characterized essential components of the telomerase holoenzyme and demonstrated how telomere dysfunction promotes genomic instability in cancer cells. Her mouse models of telomerase deficiency revealed connections between telomere shortening and cancer predisposition. She has also studied how telomerase is regulated during development and malignant transformation.
