Shanu Kothari has demonstrated that high-quality bariatric surgery with excellent cancer-relevant outcomes can be delivered in community and rural health systems, expanding access beyond academic centers for cancer prevention through surgical weight loss. His long-term follow-up studies of community bariatric surgery patients have documented sustained weight loss and metabolic improvements that are associated with cancer risk reduction. He leads research on cost-effectiveness of metabolic surgery as a cancer prevention strategy.
