Peter Kharchenko has developed computational methods for inferring copy number alterations from single-cell RNA sequencing data, enabling identification of malignant cells and clonal substructure in tumor single-cell datasets without separate DNA sequencing. His Bayesian factor analysis approaches for single-cell cancer data have quantified the relative contributions of genetic and non-genetic sources of tumor heterogeneity. His bioinformatics tools have become essential for the cancer single-cell research community to distinguish malignant from non-malignant cells and characterize intratumoral diversity.
