Kathleen Burns has made landmark contributions to understanding somatic LINE-1 retrotransposition in cancer. She developed methods to detect de novo LINE-1 insertions in tumor genomes and demonstrated that ORF1p protein serves as a pan-cancer biomarker. Her work revealed that LINE-1 insertions preferentially occur in genes critical for cancer development, establishing retrotransposition as an active mutagenic mechanism in tumorigenesis.
