Dr. Kary Mullis invented the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in 1983, for which he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1993. PCR is arguably the most consequential technology in molecular biology and has become the foundation for cancer diagnostics including mutation detection, liquid biopsy ctDNA analysis, cancer genetic screening, and infectious disease cancer risk testing. His invention enabled the entire field of molecular oncology diagnostics.
