Kai Wucherpfennig leads fundamental research into T cell dysfunction and exhaustion in the tumor microenvironment, which underlies resistance to immune checkpoint blockade. His laboratory has elucidated how epigenetic changes drive T cell exhaustion and limit IO efficacy. He has characterized key transcription factors including TOX that maintain the exhausted T cell state. His work informs strategies to reinvigorate exhausted T cells in resistant tumors.
