Jose Pedro Friedmann Angeli is a pioneer in elucidating the role of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) as the master regulator of ferroptotic cell death, demonstrating that GPX4 is the only enzyme capable of reducing phospholipid hydroperoxides within biological membranes and that its inhibition triggers ferroptosis in cancer cells. His work revealed that therapy-resistant cancer cells in a mesenchymal state are exquisitely dependent on GPX4 for survival, creating a selective vulnerability to ferroptosis induction. He has characterized the selenium dependency of GPX4 catalytic function and how selenium status influences cancer susceptibility to ferroptosis. His research has identified GPX4 as a key node for therapeutic intervention in drug-resistant cancers.
