John Lawrence, brother of cyclotron inventor Ernest O. Lawrence, was among the first to use particle beams from cyclotrons for cancer therapy in the 1930s-40s, pioneering neutron radiotherapy. His work at Berkeley's Donner Laboratory established foundational principles for particle therapy in cancer and nuclear medicine applications in oncology. He treated the first cancer patients with artificially produced radiation from cyclotron-generated particles.
