Jerry Shay is a leading expert on telomere biology in cancer and has pioneered the development of telomerase inhibitors as cancer therapy. He demonstrated that more than 90% of human cancers express telomerase, making it a near-universal cancer target. His work on imetelstat (GRN163L) led to clinical trials in multiple cancer types including myelofibrosis and myelodysplastic syndromes. He has authored landmark studies defining the role of telomere shortening in cancer initiation.
