Niels Jerne shared the 1984 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for theories of antibody diversity including the natural selection theory of antibody formation and the network theory of idiotypes. He co-founded and led the Basel Institute for Immunology. His theoretical contributions remain foundational to modern adaptive immunity.
