Jared Rutter discovered the mitochondrial pyruvate carrier (MPC) complex and demonstrated its role as a tumor suppressor, showing that MPC expression is frequently lost in cancer, forcing tumor cells to rely on glutamine and fatty acid oxidation as alternative mitochondrial fuels. His research revealed that restoring MPC expression in cancer cells suppresses tumor growth by redirecting metabolism from biosynthetic pathways toward mitochondrial oxidation. He established that metabolic flexibility at the mitochondrial level allows cancer cells to adapt to diverse nutrient environments. His discovery of MPC has opened new therapeutic approaches targeting mitochondrial substrate utilization in cancer.
