Janet Rowley
MD
Blum-Riese Distinguished Service Professor (posthumous)
👥Biography 个人简介
Janet Rowley (1925-2013) made the transformative discovery that cancer cells contain specific chromosomal translocations, particularly the t(9;22) Philadelphia chromosome in CML. Her meticulous cytogenetic work in the 1970s established that cancer is a genetic disease with specific chromosomal abnormalities, directly leading decades later to the development of imatinib targeting BCR-ABL. She is considered the mother of modern cancer cytogenetics.
