James Welsh has been a leading clinical investigator of the abscopal effect and radiation-immunotherapy combinations. His clinical observations and trials demonstrated that combining radiation with immune checkpoint blockade can trigger systemic anti-tumor immune responses at unirradiated sites. He is now pioneering the clinical translation of FLASH radiotherapy, investigating how ultra-high dose rate delivery may enhance the immunogenic effects of radiation.
