James Mitchell
PhD
Senior Investigator, Radiation Biology Branch
👥Biography 个人简介
James Mitchell is a leader in developing superoxide dismutase (SOD) mimetics as redox-modulating agents for cancer therapy, demonstrating that manganese porphyrin-based SOD mimetics can selectively protect normal tissues from radiation damage while enhancing tumor cell killing through differential redox biology. His work showed that SOD mimetics shift the cellular redox balance in tumor cells toward increased hydrogen peroxide, which combined with radiation amplifies oxidative DNA damage. He has advanced MnTE-2-PyP and related compounds through preclinical and clinical development as radioprotectors and radiosensitizers. His research has established the therapeutic principle of exploiting differential redox biology between normal and cancer cells.
